We all deal with personal challenges. Mine came at the age of 16 when I started having back pain…a driving force that has shaped who I am today. I was 18 when I had a three level spinal fusion in my lower back, due to Spondylolisthesis. By the age of 20, my fusion was coming apart, perhaps due to my exuberant love for dance while in college majoring in Dance Education. What I would later learn was that my habitual way of how I was using myself contributed directly to the fragility of my low back instability and corresponding neck problems.
Little did I know that having had surgery, addiction to pain medication, spinal misalignment, depression and digestive issues, over a period of years, that they would all become my most important teachers. That is the way life is…our greatest adversities in life become our greatest teachers.
They guided me to the Alexander Technique, Ayurveda, and Yoga. These three ‘life-affirming disciplines’ allowed me to heal myself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
The beauty of these three disciplines is that by working with a teacher, in the beginning, getting a good foundation, support, and guidance, you learn the tools/principles in which to help create a more conscious life that takes you away from being the victim or the one who is ‘suffering’ to feeling empowered from within. I believe in the end, only we can make the changes that are going to take us away from what we don’t want in our life…pain and suffering.
What I have learned on my journey is that you can be given the tools, understand the concepts, but until you start applying the knowledge, and really practicing the principles that you've been taught on a daily basis, life remains the same.
These disciplines become a way of life.
What I know for sure is that our bodies are incredible self-repairing mechanisms and that we each have the ability to change and heal ourselves from a very deep level. It’s not an easy path at times. It takes self-responsibility, self-awareness, and the ability not to give up no matter how bad the ‘suffering’ becomes. Having dealt with severe chronic pain and depression, there were times where I struggled with wondering if I would make it through the 'dark night of the soul'. These disciplines brought me back into the light.
In Ayurveda, it says that the Primordial cause of all disease is ‘Forgetting Our True Nature as Spirit’. That we are each Divine beings living in a physical form but that we see ourselves as this body and mind and we get wrapped up in our dramas and stories. Dominated by our ego and the sense of separateness. We are driven by our senses in the pursuit of pleasure and trying to avoid pain at all cost. I know I was.
What the Alexander Technique, Ayurveda, and Yoga do for me each day is bring me back to the present moment. By working with the psycho-physical approach to movement with the Alexander principals, by knowing what diet, lifestyle routines, herbs, oils and other therapies I need to do from an Ayurvedic perspective. By coming to my yoga mat each day and going within, I am then able to be more present, so that I can better serve my family, my friends, my students and myself.
Life is a journey, not a destination. Many of us have heard this spoken to us in our life. For each of us, our journey is as unique as our fingerprints. No two people experience the same moment the same way. We each take in life’s experience through our own lens. Our five senses are our gateways to our body, mind, and consciousness, where true healing takes place. It is our perceptions, thoughts, and feelings that give it meaning.
I know that my experiences in my life have brought me to the place where I am now filled with more joy and a new sense of renewal each day. I still have my ups and downs, but I now have the 'tools', skills and a 'means-whereby' to overcome any challenges in a positive and balanced way.
